Frequently Asked Questions about Policy

How does KIE fit in with the state framework? With AAAS' Benchmarks?

KIE projects, in keeping with the Scaffolded Knowledge Integration framework, tend to focus on a small number of topics, which students explore in depth. KIE does not have projects covering all the topics recommended in the California state framework, nor in Benchmarks. We do, however, have a growing curriculum library that provides projects in a wide range of topic areas. KIE projects also emphasize the scientific thinking skills called for by AAAS in Benchmarks.

What kind of assessments do you do? How will these assessments fit in with state or national standards?

Our assessments tend to be forced response questions followed by short answer questions asking students to state "the main reason for your answer." All of our assessments are based on real-world experiences; students using KIE should be learning to apply their scientific knowledge to everyday life.
