Assessment is a critical part of any classroom program. KIE provides a number of embedded tools to assess learning, including the detailed analytical notes students take in the software and final project performance. In addition, learning is often assessed through pre- and post-tests for each project. Subject matter questions on tests are consistent with the goal of knowledge integration, providing students with the opportunity to apply scientific ideas to familiar and authentic situations. For example, they may be asked which of three bowls of hot oatmeal - small, medium, or large - will cool fastest, or what material will best keep a Coke cold. In KIE, the "right answer" only receives partial credit: students are also encouraged to provide reasons for their answers, and to cite scientific principles and real-world observations as warrants for their claims. Beyond subject matter assessments, we also provide tools to measure student beliefs about the nature of science and the role of scientists.
